Three Hobbies

A teacher of mine gave me great advice on hobbies when I was at a young age. She informed us it would be wise to maintain 3 hobbies in your life. One to make money, one that keeps you fit and in good health, and the last one to keep you creative. It most certainly helps you keep yourself grounded so you can maintain a sense of self and clarity. Three hobbies sound like a lot but I assure you there are many out there that fall into a combination of two or even all three of the categories.

Music has become a major hobby for me in my life and I hope I am working on taking it further in the sense of actually creating my own music. With writing as my oldest hobby that has stayed consistent, I tend to write to music based on how it makes me feel. Perhaps I can create short stories to a song and write them here on this blog and list the track to listen to as one reads 🤔. But building a closer relationship with music has been something I have always found myself floating towards. Vinyl collecting has been a part of my wheel of hobbies since 2014 and always find myself in the zone when I go crate digging. Getting home and putting on my headphones and losing myself in another world…That almost meditative state where I lose all thought and process through all the sound and vibrations brings a sense of clarity afterwards. Music will always be a part of my life, large or small. I really hope to take it to another level!

Writing, oh writing. The love hate relationship that pulls the artistic mind apart and pushes it back together. You see, it is creative writing that I adore as it uses both sides of the brain. On the right it utilizes imagination and on the right it uses logic. I find I was falling out from writing and I wanted to make up for it, therein lies why I created this blog, to keep myself writing! I found myself in a rut and I had read something today that really put things in perspective for myself. ‘When you are consumed by thought, write. When you are uninspired, read.’ It’s so simple and it totally works! I found myself stuck in a research phase over thinking myself out of good ideas…it was time to just write!! Not burden myself on perfection. Just write the raw thoughts out. Writing will always be a part of my life and one day soon I will be working towards making it a living.

Ahhh a physical hobby. I used to have carpentry, so to speak when working with my Uncle, swimming laps at the community pool, or simply riding my bike around. After moving to OC working with a physical hobby went out the window 😅. I really will be working towards a better physical hobby, the most I have done was camping and walking around. This is one great imbalance I have had in my life, and as I have grown over the past 7 years, I really have seen the importance of a physical hobby and how much good it does for the body and mind. I already have a running buddy lined up for when I move back down to SD, even! (Lookin at you, Alto!!) So by all means if you have a physical hobby you would love to share with me, I am all ears!

Some ideas floating around for other money-making hobbies include succulent gardening and stock market trading. Creative hobbies include gardening, chess, cooking, and painting. The point is to have something in your life to keep you balanced both physically and mentally. Ensure that the hobbies are used to distract you appropriately and not from things you really need to do in your day-to-day life or have you spending money outside your means. Through hobbies, you can also gather another sense of community by becoming more involved with people that share them. Who knows, you could even create something new altogether with your hobbies and create a new trade together for yourself! When I started dating Jessie, she was at school for traditional painting. She also picked up wanting to master macarons. Well, come April 2020, she gets furloughed from her job and we must continue to be able to afford our essentials. She had already made small steps to creating Macaron Art, such as the name and the IG page, she made the decision to go full on with her Macaron business by combining her wonderful hobbies. Something so special about her was born, and I have enjoyed watching her flourish!

But just because you find your hobbies it doesn't always mean they will be easy! If you find yourself drawn to a hobby naturally, take the leap! Dive in and keep at it. Things will be tough, sure, sure, but the payout on happiness and peace of mind is worth it. That's all for me today guys! Till next time.
